All Lorentz Institute printers have been pre-configured and are ready to be used on your GNU/Linux workstation. These should appear in a drop-down menu of the print panel of the software you are using to print.

From the terminal

Use lpstat to display a list and state of available printers

lpstat -p

Print a document with lpr

lpr -P<printer_name> <document>

IP addresses and hostnames of the printers can be obtained using

$ lpstat -v

GNU/Linux, MacOS personal desktops and laptops

Connect to the UL-STRW-LION wireless network or use a cabled connection if that is available in your office 1).

We advise you use the CUPS software to install any of the IL printers.

To install the lorentz_medium printer do 2)

  • browse to https://localhost:631 (CUPS)
  • select the administration tab (insert your personal device account credentials if asked)
  • add new printer
  • select ipp printer
  • use ipps:printers.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl/printers/lorentz_medium'' * select the right manufacturer (HP in this case) * select IPP everywhere or, if that is not available, the driver corresponding to the printer model (see table above) from the drivers list * push add to finalise * optionally you can configure the printer to print double side Should you want to add any of the printers mentioned in the table above, use the following connection scheme <code>ipp:printers.lorentz.leidenuniv.nl/printers/<printer-name></code> and use either the driver appropriate for the printer model (see table above) or the IPP everywhere driver. ==== PCL driver ==== In Mac OS you can also use a PCL driver to install your printer. Using this latter will result in black-and-white printing only. ===== Printing from Laptops and other mobile devices ===== In principle you could use all the steps mentioned above for the Mac users. If your device does not have cups, you could use any software that is available on your client to set up printers. The only important thing to bear in mind is that you should be connected to UL-STRW-LION. Other wireless networks will not allow you to print on the IL printers.
1)
The network sockets you can use with your personal devices are labelled laptop
2)
tested with several GNU/Linux distros and with Mac OS Mojave
