Microsoft Remote Desktop

The Remote Desktop protocol (RDP) is Microsoft's way of running a remote session. However, this protocol has also been implemented for other operating systems, both as client (viewing the session) and as server (running the session).

In general: we do NOT offer RDP over the internet (except to the Windows RDP gateway system, see below). In order to connect to an RDP server, you need to be on our local net (including our cabled network, but excluding other university nets and eduroam). The best way to connect from outside, or when on eduroam, is to activate our institute's VPN before starting an RDP session.

RDP Gateway

For the PHYSICS domain, we have a RDP gateway service that can be used to connect from remote. A description can be found on a separate page.

Access

In the PHYSICS domain, explicit permission is needed for a user to access a specific machine (e.g. their own desktop or lab pc) through the RDP protocol. So please contact the computergroup to obtain access.

On Sterrewacht and Lorentz Linux computers, the RDP service can be installed on demand, but at the moment, it isn't present (yet) everywhere, so again, contact the computergroup for access.
